Frequently Asked Questions
R&D tax relief is available for projects that aim to achieve an advance in science or technology. This can include developing new products, processes, or services, or improving existing ones. The project must involve overcoming scientific or technological uncertainties—routine work or minor improvements do not qualify.
The amount you can claim depends on the size of your business:
- SMEs (fewer than 500 employees and turnover under £86 million or balance sheet under £74 million):
- Can claim up to 186% of qualifying R&D costs, effectively reducing Corporation Tax or receiving a cash credit.
- Large companies (under the Research & Development Expenditure Credit (RDEC) scheme):
- Can claim 20% of qualifying R&D costs, which is taxable but results in a net benefit of 16.2%.
Eligible costs include:
- Staff wages, NICs, and pensions for those working directly on the R&D project.
- Materials and consumables used in R&D (e.g., software, utilities).
- Payments to subcontractors or external specialists (subject to limitations).
- Prototypes and testing costs (if not used for commercial sale).
