- 6th March 2024
Scunthorpe local, Derek Cartwright, has recently raised more than £7000 for the Colorectal department at Scunthorpe Hospital.
On Sunday 3rd December, Derek undertook his eighth charitable swimming challenge in fourteen years at the Riddings Community Hub in Scunthorpe, completing an impressive forty lengths. The day was attended by many, with a raffle also hosted, seeing more than £1800 worth of vouchers donated by various businesses and firms within the Scunthorpe and Brigg area.
Having faced a bowel cancer diagnosis in 2021 and subsequently receiving the all-clear, Derek has continued to dedicate himself to charity fundraising efforts. Wanting to express gratitude for the exceptional care and treatment he received, he channels all his energy into fundraising for various charities. Over his lifetime, Derek's charity commitments has yielded an astounding £102,088.20, contributing significantly to multiple charitable causes.
Derek sounded his appreciation, stating, "I want to extend a massive thank you to everyone who has sponsored and donated towards my swim, and to my family who will be joining me on the day. The overwhelming support from everyone has been truly amazing."
Employees from Forrester Boyd’s Scunthorpe branch, a firm that takes pride in supporting local initiatives and fundraisers, were more than happy to support Derek's fundraising endeavours. Paul Tofton, Partner at the Scunthorpe branch, expressed admiration for Derek's efforts and staff contributions, stating, "The work Derek has invested in raising this exceptional amount of money for charity is truly fantastic. I’m incredibly proud of the staff here at the Scunthorpe branch who have donated to his fundraising efforts and supported him in achieving his goals."
The funds generated by Derek's initiative will contribute towards acquiring a TEMS scope, a valuable asset that will significantly enhance the treatment of cancer patients. Derek expressed his delight at the progress of the fundraising, affirming, "I am thrilled with how much we have raised so far, and I am confident it will greatly benefit patients, much like myself, in the future."
